BLOG is short for WEBLOG (web-log) whose meaning is closer to what it sounds like than it appears. A weblog is a web page, a log of activities or personal items, or lists, usually only one page in length, in reverse chronological order. It is that simple. However, weblogs (blogs) have become very popular, and with their growing popularity, the terms used to describe blogs have multiplied.

This manual is designed to help web users become BLOGGERS (a blogger is someone who writes or creates a blog site). Hopefully, by the end of the instruction, any web user will be a savvy blogger.

Questions you may want to ask yourself before creating your blog are:

What do I need a blog for?
If the answer is "anything", then a blog is for you, if the answer is anything else, you can also create and post it to a blog.

Who do I want to attract to my blog?
Keep in mind your intended audience or purpose for blogging (even if it is just to express your personal thoughts). When you come across terms like
"vlog", that's a video blogger,
"linklog" meaning an "all hyperlink" blog; or,"photo blog" - yep, for photos - these are to assist in the organization of your blog and attract different audiences looking for different presentations.
There is a type of blog:
"Moblog" is a PDA/mobile device compatible blog format!
There are even "genre" (meaning theme based) blogs: political blogs, travel blog, fashion blogs or legal blogs...and many more.

Do I want to pay money for maintaining a blog?
The answer is... no, no, no (meaning yes). Most blogs advertise free space and offer upgrades for a fee, or incentives to pay more. Squarespace.com offers a high-end professional website with a 30-day free trial (make sure you read the small print). If you want "free" follow the crowd, and even do a google search to see what blogs are listed most often and you can probably trust common opinions. Or, read the rest of this manual!

Do I want images on my blog, videos on my blog, or other functions?
The answer is...yes, yes, yes (meaning maybe). Blog hosts will tell you on the front page, before you sign up with them whether they host videos, photos, or just text (almost all allow photos and text and free templates; and most provide FTP - more later on that - uploads for videos, mp3...).

Do I want an "easy" blog or a "hard" blog?
It probably depends on the time you wish to devote to your blog. If you want to get started typing and do not want advanced features, then a blog like Movable Type www.mt.com is probably not for you initially (it requires .perl and other computer language knowledge), but livejournal.com has been around a long time, and loves a newbie (beginner).
